3. Driving Growth Through Data and Strategy

Rivian: Market Analysis & Strategy | Spring Semester 2025

This case study is based on a group project focused on understanding Rivian's position in the U.S. electric vehicle market and identifying opportunities to support growth and long-term profitability. My contribution focused on analyzing the market landscape, identifying key challenges, and developing data-driven strategic recommendations.

Rivian operates in a highly competitive electric vehicle market, where established players dominate market share. While the company has strong brand positioning and innovative products, it faces challenges in scaling efficiently and achieving sustainable profitability.

Through market analysis, it became clear that Rivian's relatively small market share reflects the difficulty of competing in a mature and fast-growing industry. The company faces operational challenges, including high production costs, supply chain disruptions, and inefficiencies in delivery and service factors that limit profitability and reduce its ability to fully capture the value it creates for customers.

To better understand this gap, I applied the Value Stick framework to analyze how value is created and distributed. The analysis showed that while Rivian delivers strong customer value, high operational and production costs significantly reduce profit margins creating a gap between the value delivered to customers and the value captured by the company.

Based on these findings, I identified strategic opportunities to improve performance and support growth. I proposed leveraging AI-driven solutions across key areas of the business, including supply chain optimization, demand forecasting, route planning, and predictive maintenance aiming to reduce costs, improve efficiency, and enhance decision-making.

By connecting data analysis with actionable strategy, this approach shows how Rivian can move from current operational challenges toward sustainable growth. Improving efficiency not only strengthens profitability but also supports long-term scalability and competitiveness in the EV market.
